HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BOO: That venerable bastion of Caribbean sounds and spicy fare, the BamBoo, celebrated its 10th anniversary last week with a private, invite-only bash. Once inside the gates – and many were turned away – the evening was quite the outpouring of love. The building, which in times past has been a Chinese laundry and a wicker warehouse, felt like a time warp, sucking together all the old gang so they could drink, eat, dance and trade Patti and Richard  stories. Among those accounted for were [037-001, l-r] co-owners Richard O’Brien and Patti Habib, seen here in their new sound booth, dubbed “The S.S. Minnow.” Patti credited the nightspot’s success to the support of “a lot of good friends, and a relaxed attitude.” Among those friends were [037-002, l-r] actress Helen Shaver, in town for her mom’s 80th B-day, seen with her best friend, Verna Johnson. Making a trip to the buffet were [037-003, l-r] Shuffle Demon Richard Underhill with geologist and melon eater Linda Wrong. Caught on the patio were [037-004, l-r] Rene Lalond from Gangbar Winslade, “saloon singer” Molly Johnson, Cameron House owner Sharmine Bedoe, Ruth Lockhart from Holt’s, and public relations wiz Susan Willemson. Caught horsing around were [037-005, l-r] publicity hungry psychotherapist – “Everyone needs one!” – Leah Lucas and muralist Bill Wrigley. Up on the rooftop patio, we caught up with [037-006, l-r] Flare editor lan Hylton, self-described “mega-fucking model” Meredith Cooper and roving fashion photographer Nigel Scott. Take a spin though the carousel of outtakes – photos 037-007 to 037-028 – for more visual memories.

HORSING AROUND: With nary a western influence within earshot but many a western movie poster in view, The Saddletramps had an album release party at the sweatiest club in town, Ultrasound. The very cool Well Gone Bad is the new recording, their third album and first CD. On hand were the band themselves: [037-029, clockwise from top left] Brian Duguay, John Dehaas, Ken Horne and Andy Lindsay. We also caught up with [037-030, l-r] A&M A&R guy – try that three times fast – Pablo Fairhall and supporter of all things indie (note the Cub shirt) Yvette Ray from CKLN and Sam’s. Seen hanging by the counter were [037-031, l-r] Peter Abbott – who works for the band – and celebrating her new post as music editor of The Varsity, Amber Golem

GOOD SWEATY DEEDS: The Christian Children’s Fund continued its Cycle for Kids ’93 fund raising efforts with a night of comedy at the Laugh Resort. Behind the push for $250,000 are [037-036, l-r] Judy Shapiro, organizer of the comedy night, and Karen Wilkinson, who masterminded the nine-day, 900-km bike ride. Among the cyclists who endured the ride, with each bringing in a minimum of $2,500, were [037-037, l-r] Karen Leckie, road crew member Kristy McDonald and riders Cori Dobo and Laurea Navratil. Crashing and burning for a good cause was [037-038] Jerrold Tanaka, who got scraped up pretty bad after taking a fall on the course. Hey! Somebody want to buy this guy some new specs???
