KIM CRASHES TWIST BASH: The Art Gallery of Ontario was the venue of choice for the premiere, pre-release screening of director Ron Mann‘s latest film Twist, a documentary on the dance craze of the ’50s. Prime Minister Kim Campbell , who dropped by for a boo [032-001, l-r], is seen here talking to Ron and apparently giving him some pointers on how to operate a camera – or maybe she has a fishing story? Only Ron knows for sure. Following the film, Kim hit the dance floor (along with a load of security and media) and got in one of her greatest photo ops ever, [031-011 to 031-013] generally disrupting the party. As one observer put it, “What’s with all the political hacks on the dance floor?” Once the PM split, the fun returned for us mere mortals at the reception/party, where we caught up with [032-002, l-r] actor Shona and Doug Slack, the senior producer, on-air promotions man for CITY-TV/MuchMusic. Squeezing in a stogie by the bar were [032-003, l-r] musician Spike of the Royal Crowns, and Nancy, the Squeeze Club manager. In the hall between the galleries were [032-004, l-r] stylist Meileen (of the Plutino Group) and Stacey Gains, makeup artist with MAC cosmetics (“Makeup to the stars, darling!”). And out on the front steps, having a butt and generally avoiding the crushing fury of Kimmania were [032-005, l-r] the film’s co-producer Sue Len Quon and Ron himself. SHORT, FAST, LOUD: The 7th Annual CKLN Street Crawl hit Queen W. on Friday, as the highlight of the station’s Real Canadian Week. With 16 bands playing in five venues, all in one night, you gotta move! Starting out the night at the Rivoli were the guys in Zen Bungalow [032-029, l-r], Grant Page, Alan Wolanin, Rod Slaughter and Greg Lev. Quoth the band, “We’re from Winnipeg, where it’s a lot cooler in the summer”. At the BamBoo were [032-030, l-r], Vashti Persad, host of CKLN’s “Shockadelica,” and station manager Eun-Sook Lee. Getting the Boo shakin’ to smooth bhangra sounds were Punjabi By Nature: [032-031, l-r], Paul, Chris (front). George, Tony and Romy. At Ultrasound taking  in the Latin sounds of Tio Salsa were [032-032, l-r], blackjack dealers and cross-country travellers Toby Goldbach and Jeff Barnum. NEW MUSIC SURFACES: Uprising International, a new record label in town, held its first record release party at The Real Jerk Pit on Monday. Their roster is loaded with Caribbean and African talent, including the brains behind the whole affair [032-041, l-r] Ras Leon, the company president, and Donna Makeda, the VP. Among the acts showcased were [032-042, l-r] the folks in The Light of Zion – Ilona Peter, Jahsi and Jackie Walker– and [032-043, l-r] the guys in Stanley Mann – Stanley Mann, Dan Man and Winston Meghu. Unpublished images follow. Never before published outtakes follow.
