RUSSIAN CONNECTION: The Dave Rave Conspiracy slid into Ultrasound for the premiere of its Russian video, “Weight of the World.” Huh? Well, it seems the band – [019-001, L-R] Coyote Shivers, Billy Ficca, Lauren Agnelli and Dave Rave – have a record deal with Melodyia, a Russian label. So, they spent eight days in the East Bloc, recording the album and making a video. That’s the vid’s director [019-002, L-R] Scott Dobson, giving publicity assistant Joanne Powell a hard time after she graciously offered to model the artillery uniform he acquired from a general they stayed with. Bad Scott! To complete the Hamilton conspiracy aspect, Dave’s mom, Grace DesRoches [019-003], showed up, making Dave a happy man. Don’t forget, Dave, Mother’s Day is coming. ASSAULT THEATRE: Scheherazade, a very tough play about rape and the effects it has on its victims, opened at The Canadian Stage. After the play, the audience is invited to have an open discussion with the director and cast on the issues presented. Relaxing after a very emotional evening are the cast [019-010, L-R] Peter James Haworth, Janet Land, Randy Hughson and Robert Weiss. Sharing opinions and views are [019-011, L-R] Hermine Weiss, mother of cast member Weiss, and the play’s director, Tina Packer. Unidentified opening night guests in 019-012.
INDIE SCREEN SCENE: Images 93, the Festival of Independent Film and Video, got off to a rousing start with an opening night party last Friday. Held at La Pantera Rosa, a gay Latino drag bar on College, the house was packed to the rafters and twisting to a Latin backbeat with the crème de la crème of indie film talent and a great selection of men who look damn fine in a dress. Enjoying the proceedings were [019-015, L-R] filmmaker David Findlay, whose Gender, Lace and Glass … is in the program, and Tom Leohardt, who designed the catalogue for the event. Hanging around in the corner were [019-014, L-R] filmmakers Mina Shum, Peter Wintonick (Manufacturing Consent) and Ann Marie Fleming, whose So Far So… is showing, plus the arm of an unidentified flash blocker. Finally, [019-013, L-R], we find Samantha Trench and Jorge Lozano, co-directors of Samuel & Samantha on the Emancipation of All, celebrating backstage just before Samantha performed for the crowd. ROLLING IN: Rock ‘n’ Roll band 13 Engines [019-025, L-R] Jim Hughes, Grant Ethier, Mike Robbins and John Critchley, rolled into the Edgewater Hotel on Saturday and pounded out a set in support of their new CD, Perpetual Motion Machine. Taking in the sound and fury of it all was [019-026] Randy Kwan of the comedy troupe Disney Outside Yer Window. And from the Wonderfully, Beautiful, Talented Women file, we find [019-027, L-R] fashion illustrator Amy Szep, computer graphics person Heather Ball, production co-ordinator Charlotte Engeo, graphic artist Andrée LaChapelle and jewelry designer Justine Harrod.
