HEY KIDS! LET’S PUT ON A SHOW!!! The plays are coming, the plays are coming! As part of preparations for the Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival, the organizers have to figure out who gets to put on the shows. How? Dramatic content? Past record Greased palms? Oh heavens no – they hold a lottery. How democratic. (Figures Canadian would find a way to adjudicate that’s fair). Three hundred names in a hat for 65 spots and 30 on the waiting list. And the winner is…. lottery queens Diane Flacks and Valerie Buhagiar [008-001, l-r] pull out the magic numbers. Lucky stiff Christopher Earle [008-002], whose number came up for The Night Kitchen, is congratulated by Jenny Parsons and Judith Scott (bet they just want parts). All three perform in The Second City. Sell-proclaimed “beautiful losers” [008-003, l-r] Patty Jarvis, Drew Leavy, Amita Daniels and Mackenzie Grey, actors all, say they’ll be back.

LOOK, LISTEN, DRINK: The PolyGram Spring ’93 Roadshow is a chance for the label to put on a show and display its wares to key people in the retail and promo trades. The attendees swooned over a live show and special video presentation while their critical faculties were blurred (i.e. free bar). In attendance [008-020, l-r], is a pile of comics: Bonnie McFarlane, Sean Tweedley, Ron Vaudry, Billy Cowan and writer Lynn Shawcroft. Sean, Ron and Billy tried to get the crowd to loosen up, to no avail. Also in attendance were [008-021, l-r] Megan Oldfield, graphic designer, and Cassandra Vasik, Juno Award-winning singer (Best Country Vocalist).

SADDLE UP THE HORSES & GAS UP THE 4×4, THERE’S GONNA BE A PARTY: A new nightclub has shown up in deepest Scarborough – Sundance (Jus’ Country). The star attraction on opening night was Melanie Greenwood, creator of the Achy Breaky Heart dance and star of Hot Country Dancing, Vol. II – not available in stores, order yours today! Wow. Dancing where people touch each other. In [008-027] we find Melanie, backed up by the Timberland Cloggers, aching from doing this dance so much. She tried to teach the moves to the media types, but they just can’t dance.
