STREETSOUND MAGAZINE'S 6th ANNIVERSARY RAVE
Now what is the diff 'twixt a rave and any other really loud party? "It's the music," says Sylvie Falar, the director of Streetsound magazine. Oh, and I thought it was the drugs. No, it seems a rave needs lots of high-energy techno and the right attitude to continue dancing till dawn and beyond. Well, this one – held at the Phoenix – didn't really get going till after midnight, when suddenly the parlor started jumping. People were actually breakdancing! Oh, and was this event LOUD! I thought the bass thump was going to rattle the screws in my camera loose. Photo 001-001 - Fully-clothed Barenaked Lady Tyler Stewart, with "The Prince of Schmooze," illustrator Emmanuel Lopez and unnamed party enthusiast get close. Photo 001-002 is indie recording artist Christina Lorr, whose single "Dark as the Night"– a house tune – is available around town. One question though: if this is a rave, where were all the whistles?
ZOO BAR OPENING NIGHT PARTY
Friday's snowstorm saw the Metro Zoo closed for the first time ever. In its absence, the animals all converged on the Zoo Bar on Queen St. W. Man, what a packed house, wall to wall flesh, and the crowd was just lapping it up. An awful lot of licking going on in this place. Newlyweds James and Lisa Campbell, (001-003), get into the action. James sings for the band Rail T.E.C., while Lisa toils behind the scenes. Meg Campbell, left, and Shawn Yoder, (photo 001-004) , got caught in the act as well. The coolest part of this establishment has got to be the little cages and booths along the walls. You can turn off the lights in either, and even draw the curtain in the booths. Hey, sometimes you need a little privacy. Snagging a cage to call their own, (005, l-r) are fashion student Cherry with promoter Billy Delaine and Angie Eve, one of the bar's go-go dancers. The tunes, spun by DJs Scott Carins and Eric, kept the stainless steel dance floor packed. Sax player Lincoln T. Thorne added a few extra touches live that really wailed.
